If you are visiting the Charleston, SC area be sure to pack your gravel bike. The hundreds of miles of roads in the Francis Marion National Forest are mostly hard-packed gravel, with some grassy double-track, with very little elevation gain.
Parking at the Witherbee Ranger Station, we were able to do a 25 mile double loop around the Hellhole Swamp area. There are no facilities, so come prepared with water and food. The trails can get muddy, so bring a fender for your bike, a towel and a change of clothes for after the ride.
Looking for a challenge, the Hellhole Gravel Grind features a weekend of gravel racing and offers multiple events geared toward riders of all abilities held every September. Despite being pancake flat, this unique event will test riders' physical and mental toughness.
