American Tobacco Trail is a recreational 22 mile rail-trail from rural New Hill in Wake County to downtown Durham. Three parking areas provide easy access to the American Tobacco Trail: New Hill-Olive Chapel, Wimberly and White Oak Church. Restroom facilities are available at the New Hill-Olive Chapel and White Oak Church lots.
Trail surface is mostly hard-packed dirt with sections or loose gravel and paved sections. You can ride any type of bike here from road bike with some tread, cross style bike, hybrid or trail bike. A variety of trail users frequent this multiple-use trail including bicyclists, runners, walkers, dog walkers, and horseback riders. It is the responsibility of each trail user to adhere to the "share the trail" etiquette in yielding to other user groups.
No specific gear required for this trail, but this is a
great place to test out your loaded bike. This easy grade and out and back route provide the perfect place to prepare for that next big adventure!
