First thing, Bald Head island is no longer an island. The truth is, it hasn’t officially been an island since 1999 when the inlet closed due to Hurricane Floyd. That inlet is now filled in with sand, it joins Fort Fisher Recreation Area to BHI with a continuous beach, perfect for fat bikes!
Parking is available at Fort Fisher Recreation Area. Once you get past the adjacent beach crowd you will see very few people for nine glorious miles of pristine beach. Be sure to check the tides before you start, high tide will make it more difficult but low tide allows for wide, hard packed sand for your fat or mid-fat bike. Strong winds can also be a factor, so keep that in mind.
If time allows, you can ride around the 3.5 mile long island (which does not allow cars) and ride by Old Baldy Lighthouse. There is MoJo’s on the Harbor Restaurant and Sandpiper to get ice cream, which I highly recommend.
Packing for this roundtrip should include sunscreen, lots of water and snacks. You will definitely want some survival gear because there is no shelter or place to get anything before BHI. Recommend emergency blanket or sleeping bag in a handlebar pack or the Revelate Designs Viscacha Saddle Pack, along with standard bike repair kit.
If you don't like crowds, you will enjoy this quiet paradise!
