Off Road Adventure
The Palmetto Trail is South Carolina’s longest pedestrian and bicycle trail of 350 miles currently and will be 500 continuous miles when finished. Divided up into different sections, we decided to explore the Awendaw Passage which is graded easy 7.1 miles coastal trail.
Starting at Buck Hall Recreational Area in the Francis Marion National Forest, the trail is mostly pine needles with very little elevation except for ramps to bridges and boardwalks. Sections get very rooty with lots of tight twists and turns to keep you from getting bored. We took our gravel bikes but would have preferred a wider tire to smooth out the bumps.
Camping is available at the Buck Hall Recreation Area along with picnic area and parking. Campground is situated along the Intracoastal Waterway and provides great access to the Palmetto trailhead.
