Family Friendly Cycling Vacation

Updated: Feb 21

The Virginia Creeper Trail is a popular 34 mile rail-trail destination for cycling. From Whitetop Station near the top of the second highest peak in Virginia, the Creeper Trail meanders mostly downhill through some spectacular scenery. There are nearly 50 wooden trestles as you glide above this stunning scenery and travel through small, charming towns and past restored railroad depots.

We took a shuttle from Abington to Whitetop, cycled approximately 2.5 to 3 hours (depending on your pace) to Damascus and stopped for lunch. We rode another 2 hours or so from Damascus to Abingdon. We stayed at the Martha Washington Inn and Spa, a beautiful historic Inn in Abington adjacent to the trailhead.

The trail is hard packed dirt with very gentle elevation grade, great for beginners. For this reason, we took our son when he was 11 years old and had a great time. Most any type of bike will work here like a mountain bike, hybrid or even a cruiser style bike. Minimal gear requirements necessary, bring money so you can get lunch or ice cream along the trail. For a more challenging trip I would recommend using a cross bike and riding up to Whitetop and back.

Whether you’re headed up or down, you’ll find many places to eat in both Damascus and Abingdon and several casual cafés and ice cream stops, right along the trail. In addition, there are several vault toilets trail side, as well as restroom facilities at several of the restored rail depots and at the trail heads.
