East Coast Greenway Alliance is developing a 3,000-mile route for safe cycling from Maine to Key West. South Carolina was the first state to complete their portion of greenways that stays near the coast for 271 miles.
You can access this greenway at the entrance to Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet. The greenway is a paved trail away from the road, but some sections are paved shoulders on the roadways.
All types of bikes will do the job: road, hybrid, cyclo-cross or cruiser style bikes all good choices on the flat terrain. We choose our hybrid bikes with mid-fat tires so that we could do part of the ride on greenway trails and return trip riding on the beach.
This area has so much to offer for exploring! Areas of interest would be Pawley’s Island, Brookgreen Gardens, Murrell’s Inlet, Surfside Beach and Myrtle Beach area. One of the highlights was exploring Huntington Beach State Park with their birding observation area, scenic hiking trails, pristine beachfront area and historic Atalaya House tours.
